What recession means
When the gum margin moves away from its former position, more of the tooth or root may become exposed. A tooth may look longer or feel sensitive near the gumline. Recession can have several contributors, including periodontal disease and mechanical factors. It should not automatically be assigned to brushing too hard without an assessment.
Tell the team when you noticed the change and whether it seems to be progressing. Include sensitivity, bleeding and any change in the bite. A photograph may help describe an earlier appearance, but clinical examination is needed to interpret the tissue and tooth support.
Why exposed surfaces need suitable care
An exposed root differs from enamel-covered crown surfaces. Sensitivity and decay risk may influence the plan. Ask which areas need attention and how to clean them without either avoiding them entirely or scrubbing them forcefully.
If water or an instrument triggers a sharp sensation, identify the site before treatment. The clinician can assess the symptom and discuss an appropriate comfort plan. A new painful tooth should not be assumed to be harmless recession-related sensitivity without checking other possibilities.
What professional cleaning can do
Scaling can remove deposits where indicated, and the hygienist can help you improve plaque control. Cleaning alone does not move a receded gum margin back to its former position or rebuild all lost support. If treatment beyond hygiene is proposed, ask what problem it addresses and what result is realistic.
Some situations may require a dentist or periodontist’s evaluation. Referral should come with an explanation rather than leaving you to infer the diagnosis from the word surgery. The right next step depends on findings, symptoms and risk.
Changing home technique
Ask the hygienist to observe your brush movement and pressure. A soft brush and controlled method may help avoid unnecessary trauma, but the recommendation should be individualized. If interdental cleaning hurts, have the fit checked rather than forcing the aid under the gum.
Avoid abrasive powders and DIY scraping on an exposed root. More stain removal is not automatically better prevention. Discuss any whitening plan before treatment, especially if the area is already sensitive.
Follow change over time
Ask whether measurements or photographs will be used to monitor the margin and support. Find out what symptoms or visible changes should prompt earlier review. Stable recession may need a different plan from active disease or progressing tissue loss. The useful goal is clean, comfortable and monitored surfaces with a clear explanation of what can be maintained and what requires further treatment.
