Why a tooth can throb when you lie down
A painful tooth may seem manageable during the day, then become hard to ignore in bed. Inflamed tissue inside the tooth is enclosed by hard tooth structure. Changes in circulation and pressure with lying down may intensify symptoms in some people. At night there are also fewer distractions. These are possible explanations for the pattern, not a way to diagnose its cause from the time on the clock.
Decay, a crack, a failing restoration or inflammation of the pulp may be involved. Grinding can cause a different pattern of tooth or jaw discomfort. Pain can also be referred from another area. A dentist needs to connect your account with an examination and appropriate tests. Do not assume every nighttime toothache is an abscess, or that the absence of visible swelling rules out a significant problem.
Describe the pattern, not just the pain score
Tell the office whether pain starts on its own, wakes you, lingers after hot or cold drinks, or hurts with biting. Explain whether sitting up changes it and whether the symptoms are becoming more frequent. Mention swelling, a bad taste, fever or feeling unwell. Those details help the team advise on how quickly you should be seen.
Pain that eases by morning has not necessarily resolved. Even a more dramatic reduction in pain can occur without the cause being cured. Persistent or recurring nighttime pain deserves timely dental assessment rather than repeated attempts to sleep through it. You do not have to wait for a routine cleaning appointment.
What may help while arranging care
Some people find resting with the head slightly raised more comfortable. Avoid the foods, temperatures and chewing pressure that clearly trigger the painful area. Keep the mouth gently clean. Ask a pharmacist or clinician which non-prescription pain medicine is safe with your health conditions and current medicines; follow the label and do not combine products with the same ingredient.
Do not place aspirin, alcohol or other irritating substances against the tooth or gum. Do not puncture a swelling or use leftover antibiotics. Temporary relief buys comfort while you arrange assessment; it does not repair a cavity or remove the source of an infection.
When the situation is urgent
Seek prompt dental advice for severe or worsening pain, swelling, fever or difficulty opening the mouth. Trouble breathing or swallowing, swelling around the eye or rapidly spreading facial or neck swelling requires emergency medical assessment. In Toronto, call 911 for a medical emergency.
Where cleaning fits
Regular home hygiene, appropriate professional cleaning and examinations help reduce preventable disease and identify concerns. They cannot guarantee that a tooth will never hurt. Once the pulp is inflamed or infected, routine cleaning of the outside of the tooth is not a substitute for diagnosis and treatment. This is an educational guide, not an offer of emergency treatment or a promise that the listed practice can see you immediately.
